OGS Get's Fancy

Picture
Can you say "super" fancy?

This week, the Ohio Genealogical Society released their exhibitor and sponsor information for the 2014 conference. This is not your run of the mill invitation, however.

First, I have to thank Thomas MacEntee of Geneabloggers and Hack Genealogy for the email on this one.

Second, you really need to see this publication. The GenEx2014 Exhibitor and Sponsor Booklet, produced on Issuu, by the team behind the 53rd Annual OGS Conference (30 Apr - 3 May, Kalahari Resorts  Sandusky, Ohio) is absolutely beautiful. I've been watching this event with interest, as the theme and location stand out from the majority of genealogy events anyway. An African-themed resort, the Kalahari promises to be a fantastic venue for this event. What a great concept, for genealogy is an adventure, is it not?  And that is exactly how this conference committee has set the tone for 2014: adventure, excitement, and genealogy! What could be better?

I must applaud them on this stunning piece. Incredibly well done, it provides the basic information you would expect of a conference looking for sponsors and advertising. But it is so far from what has been done before, it's a bit mind blowing. Read through a boring exhibitor press release? Not in Ohio! They've got a full color magazine!

Wishing I had images to share, but alas, you will just have to follow the link above and see it for yourself.

The message to take away? Genealogy conferences are changing. This is just one more example of that reality, and a wake up call to all the other major events. It's time to step it up, conference community, and take our events to the next level.

Even if you are not planning on attending, take a look at what OGS is doing. They just put another feather in their cap.

Call for Proposals: 2014 Annual Meeting

2014 Annual Meeting

Kansas City, MO, April 24-26, 2014

Call for Proposals

The Midwest Archives Conference invites submissions of presentations, sessions, posters, and papers for its annual meeting, to be held April 24-26, 2014, in Kansas City, Missouri. The 2014 Program Committee invites proposals on all aspects of archives and archival work. Creative and timely presentations from professionals in archives and related fields (public history, libraries, museums, genealogy, information science, and records management) and from graduate students are very welcome.

Typically, sessions are 90 minutes in length with three panelists and a chair or moderator. Try to strive for a diverse panel with participants from different institutions! Early proposal submissions are encouraged, but the finaldeadline is September 20, 2013!

We also welcome proposals for professional workshops. Also, if you have a proposal that you think would fit better into a lightning round format, feel free to submit that, too!

All submissions will be given due consideration by the Program Committee; here are some ideas to help you get started:

1) Because Kansas City is known as a cradle of jazz (in the 1930s Kansas City jazz marked the transition from structured big band to the improv style of Bebop), the theme for the 2014 Annual Meeting will be “The Syncopations of History.” Proposals focusing on jazz and blues, music in general, or that otherwise complement the meeting’s theme will hopefully have your colleagues swinging in their seats.

2) Musical syncopation involves a variety of rhythms which are in some way unexpected and create an off-beat tune or piece of music. Perhaps your day-to-day archival work or your career has taken unusual twists, involved some elements of surprise, required a bit of improvisation, or featured accents where they wouldn’t normally occur. Share your experience so others aren’t caught off guard!

3) Kansas City has long served as a major American crossroads - as an origin point for westward expansion, a hotbed of military activity during the Civil War, or as the near population and geographic centers of the country.  Sessions focusing on the political and social history of which Kansas City has been a part are always welcome.

4) And speaking of crossroads, we all know that our institutions and collections are places where different people, places, stories and histories come together. Let’s meet together ourselves and discuss situations involving meetings, mixings, encounters and junctures in our own work.

5) Kansas City is home to both the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the Black Archives of Mid-America, which help document the diversity of our great nation. Share the story of your diverse collections or the unique and distinctive solutions you have employed within your repository.

6) Known for its steak and barbecue, Kansas City has a storied culinary heritage. With stockyards once only second in size to Chicago’s and a tomato and molasses-based barbecue sauce, Kansas City has a meaty gastronomic tradition. Tell us about the unique cooking or culinary heritages documented in your collections or how your work has marinated over time or in combination with unique ingredients to become a recipe for success.

All arrangements, progressions, and styles of presentations will be considered for 2014 MAC. Don’t delay; send in your proposals today!  To submit a session proposal, save the submission form to your computer, complete it, and then send it via email, traditional mail, or fax it to one of the co-chairs listed on the form. You may also submit a proposal electronically here.

Congratulations to Those Recognized at NGS 2013

05/08/2013

I received this press release today from the National Genealogical Society:
NGS honored excellence in the categories of newsletter editorship and service to the Society with the presentation of several awards at the Opening Session of the NGS 2013 Family History Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, on 8 May 2013. The Opening Session keynote speaker was historian Marian Smith, Chief, Historical Research Branch, US Citizenship and Immigration Services who spoke on the topic “People, Policy, and Records: The Importance of Historical Background” after which NGS President Jordan Jones presented the following awards.

Each year, the NGS Newsletter Competition recognizes the hard work, long hours, and creativity that editors devote to their newsletters. A panel of three judges reviews each newsletter on material interest, variety, organization, quality of writing and editing, readability, and attractiveness. This year’s categories and winners are:

Family Association Newsletter:

Winner: The Andreas Killian Descendants Historical Association Newsletter, edited by Charles D. Killian of Ellenwood, Georgia.

Honorable Mention: The Seeley Genealogical Society Newsletter, edited by Paul Taylor of Alexandria, Virginia.

County/Local Genealogical and/or Historical Society, for societies with less than 500 members:

Winner: The Newsletter of the Irish Family History Forum, edited by Patricia Mansfield Phelan of Freeport, New York.

Honorable Mention: The Quarterly Newsletter of the South Bend Area Genealogical Society, edited by Eric Craig of South Bend, Indiana.

Major Genealogical and/or Historical Society, for societies with more than 500 members:

Winner: PastFinder, the monthly newsletter of the Silicon Valley Computer Genealogy Group, edited by Janet Brigham of Mountain View, California.

The President's Citation is given in recognition of outstanding, continuing, or unusual contributions to the field of genealogy or the society. The National Genealogical Society President selects the recipient and this year Jan Meisels Allen has been selected.

Jan has been a key leader of the Records Preservation and Access Committee (RPAC), a joint committee of NGS, the Federation of Genealogical Societies, and the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies. Over the last few years she has tracked legislation that may impact genealogists’ access to the Social Security Death Index in the US Congress and access to vital records in many states. She is relentless in writing statements as appropriate to House and Senate committee chairs as well as governors and state representatives advocating open records access. She is a dynamo on RPAC as the voting member representing the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS). She doggedly finds bills being proposed that affect records access and brings them to the attention of RPAC, and thus the genealogical community. She has served in many roles, including vice president, IAJGS; president, Jewish Genealogical Society of Conejo Valley and Ventura County; and board member, Friends of the Agoura Hills Library. Jan receives the President's Citation for her vigilance in support of records preservation and in defense of public access to public records.

NGS also recognized several individuals for their dedicated efforts in support of the NGS 2013 Family History Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada:

The Award of Honor was presented in recognition of dedication and sustained service in support of the conference. Recipients of the award were Michael Brenner, Chair, Local Host Societies; and local host societies Centennial Las Vegas Genealogy Society, Clark County Nevada Genealogical Society, Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas FamilySearch Library, Nevada African American Genealogy Society, and Nevada State Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Certificates of Appreciation were given to recognize the committee chairs who spent countless hours preparing for the conference. NGS is aware that there could be no conference if it were not for the volunteers’ efforts and commitment. So honored were Lynne Bogner and R. Wayne Stoker, Co-Chairs of Volunteers; Patricia Dell’aira and Rebecca Eisenman, Co-Chairs of Hospitality; Betteann Meyers, Publicity Chair; Carole Montello, Registration Chair; Leo Myers, Exhibits Chair; and Bill White, Local Events and Tours Chair.
